Why is Jesus Coming on a “Cloud” 10.05.2017 Leslie Lyons
“And I looked, and behold, a white cloud. And on the cloud sat one like the Son of man, having a golden crown on His head, and a sharp sickle in His hand” Revelation 14:14.
As I have been again crawling my way through my Bible study of the book of Revelation I have reached the 14th chapter. I came to a complete standstill. A mental block. Why is it told Jesus would appear on a “cloud”. As a backdrop, I have been (and called to be) a student of Emanuel Swedenborg for nearly 20 years. He was a Bible scholar, commentator, and mystic. As he said the WORD (Bible) is the ultimate, supreme, highest in order revelation of our God. Without it, the church on earth could not exist. So, Swedenborg, the man is not my inspiration, but as a teacher “making disciples of all nations”. Or as Paul said he sat “at the feet of Gamaliel”. But only God can give truth, life, and revelation to His Word. Amen.
So the point is Swedenborg said that in every word, dot and title there is a natural meaning (i.e. historical, prudence, wisdom, truth) but hidden (and cloaked) within that natural meaning is a spiritual meaning. For Jesus clearly taught that the church on earth is intrinsically connected to the church in heaven (Mat 6:10). Where else do you think our dear old saints go when they pass? To sit on clouds and strum lyres? No. They are transformed into angels of light. Promoted to the congregation of heaven so to speak. The angels in heaven also read the same WORD, but they can only understand it and see it delights in the spiritual sense. For they dwell in a spiritual realm and not a natural realm as we do.
Having said all that, the one word that had me stumped was “cloud”. In the Old Testament, it is found in 79 verses. In the New Testament, it is found in 15 verses. In Revelation: “And I looked, and behold, a white cloud. And on the cloud sat one like the Son of man, having a golden crown on His head, and a sharp sickle in His hand” Rev 14:14.
So to paraphrase, Jesus is coming back to earth on a “white cloud”. The second coming of the Lord. The great harvest. The most anticipated event in the history of the Christian church. Awwh, but how does the congregation of heaven see and comprehend this Biblical verse? I am not the brightest bulb in the pack, but I will share the conclusions that I have reached.
Strong’s OT Dictionary H6051 “cloud” essentially means to cover or cloud over. To obscure. Another “cloud” is H5645, essentially means “darkness”. The NT Strong’s “cloud” G3507 is cloudiness or essentially to obscure. But Revelation verse 14 says the Lord is returning on a “white cloud”. Strong’s NT word “white” G3022 = “Light”. So, one word, “cloud” suggests darkness, one word, “white” suggests brilliant light. So I needed to examine light and color as a Biblical subject for further examination and to clarify this apparent contradiction of terms.
Swedenborg for many years held Sweden’s most important cabinet post as director of mines. For we know on this earth there are three kingdoms. The animal kingdom, the plant kingdom, and the mineral kingdom. As a brilliant scientist, Swedenborg had an exquisite knowledge of minerals. I myself worked nearly 20 years as a commercial optical mineralogist. I can tell you the geometry, mathematics, and physics of mineral structures is astounding beyond comprehension. But the main tool of an optical mineralogist is determining and associating color wavelengths and properties of light. So I looked up and researched Swedenborg’s spiritual theory of colors.
The Apostle John is shown the “Holy Jerusalem”, The New Church
“And the foundations of the wall of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones. The first foundation was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, a chalcedony; the fourth, an emerald; the fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolite; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, topaz; the tenth, chrysoprasus; the eleventh, hyacinth; the twelfth, amethyst” Rev 21:19-20.
In one of the most precious and beautiful verses found in the Bible, we are given a glimpse of the mineralogy of heaven. Each stone representing the perfection of the Lord Jesus, and of His kingdom.
Returning to the theory of colors this is what was revealed to Emanuel Swedenborg by the angels sent to instruct him;
“There are two colors in general, which shine forth in precious stones, the color red and the color bright white; the other colors, as green, yellow, blue, and many others, are composed of them (red & white), by means of black; and by the color red is signified the good of love, and by the color bright white is signified the truth of wisdom.
The reason why red signifies the good of love is because it derives its origin from the fire of the sun, and the fire of the sun of the spiritual world is in its essence the Divine love of the Lord, this the good of love; and the reason why the color bright white signifies the truth of wisdom is because it derives its origin from the light which proceeds from the fire of that sun, and that proceeding light
is in its essence the Divine wisdom, thus the truth of wisdom”. Apocalypse Explained 915.
So to recap, all colors are composed spiritually by means of pure red and pure white shaded by degrees of the color black. This is the key to the paradox of “white” and “cloud” found in Rev 14:14. The word “cloud” represents the WORD and how it has been/being received by the church in the earth. As discussed “cloud” in the original language is “darkness”. And darkness (black) is formed by lack of “light”, or what is the same principle spiritually, the TRUTH (truth of wisdom). But thanks be to God, Jesus is coming on a “white cloud”. This is because through the church on earth the TRUTH has been obscured by a “cloud” of errors. He is bringing with Him the color bright “white”. The true King, Judge, and Deliverer will appear to dissipate that “cloud”, exposing the TRUE reflection (“white light”) of the LOVE of God (“pure red”).
The Church of Jesus Christ Needs to Realize it is under Grave Judgment
Truly the church on earth has to take on the attitude of the church found in Berea;
“And these were more noble than those of Thessalonica, in that they received the Word with all readiness of mind and searched the Scriptures daily to see if those things were so” Act 17:11.
We need to be more like the brethren in Berea. For the church on earth to be re-connected to the Lord and the church in heaven, we need to reopen the scrolls. We need to open our hearts and minds, close ranks and discard egos and old ideas. We need to “search the Scriptures daily” to receive light and revelation because our eternal lives and our world depend on it. Chaos and evil are constantly struggling to gain a foothold. For a “cloud” of obscurity and darkness is something the church of Jesus Christ has no business being involved in!
“And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to each according as his work is” Rev 22:12.
