Vision of the Lord Human

January 6, 2005 Vision of the Lord Human

“Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And [Pilate] saith unto them, Behold the man!” (John 19:5)

Yesterday, while seated in a church service, I had an extraordinary experience. I saw a vision of the Lord. I knew inside myself that it was Him. A man came forth forward out of a dark background, and light is shown down upon him, as though it were a spotlight.

The vision of the Lord that I saw was not your typical painting of a glorified Lord Jesus

He was wearing a long brown robe that looked dirty. I noticed he seemed rather short, perhaps 5’5″ or 5’6″ tall. His head was down, so I could not see his face. He had thick, long, dirty locks of hair covering his face. He slowly lifted his head, and the hair began to lift and fall back from his face.

The instance I saw his face, I felt repulsed. Jesus could not be this ugly! His nose was crooked and long. He looked like someone who had not bathed in a week! But then I saw and felt the expression on His face. It was of incomprehensible heartache and concern. I immediately thought of the Scripture in Isaiah;

“For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, [there is] no beauty that we should desire him” (Isaiah 53:2)

“He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were [our] faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. This is the one who came to set the captives free

“For [there is] one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;” (1 Timothy 2:5).

I realized I was not seeing the risen, glorified Lord, but the man, the Divine who became human

The Divine who became one of us, but rather a little lower than the angels! Strong’s Hebrew and Greek Dictionaries: “Man” G444: anth’-ro-pos. The countenance; manfaced, a human being. “Man” G435: an’-ayr.

It was a startling revelation. But it was not surprising. Having spent many years in the church, it was somewhat well known among the old saints, that some had reported similar experiences in seeing the Lord as human.

If this is true, then the Lord of glory really took on the form of a lowly humble servant.
